IV hydration has become popular, and with popularity comes a lot of marketing. This is the honest version: what it is, what it isn't, and who it's for.
What it is
IV hydration delivers sterile fluid, typically a saline solution, directly into your bloodstream through a small cannula. Because it bypasses the gut, fluid is available to your body immediately rather than being absorbed over time. A session at Fjör runs about 70 minutes, including a nursing assessment beforehand and a short check afterwards.
What it isn't
IV hydration is a wellness service, not a treatment for a medical condition. It won't cure illness, fix fatigue caused by something else, or replace the basics of drinking water regularly and looking after yourself. If you're frequently run down, dehydrated or unwell, the right first step is your GP, so that nothing underlying gets missed.
Who should avoid it
Receiving fluid intravenously can strain the heart and kidneys in people with certain conditions. IV hydration may be unsuitable, or need a doctor's clearance first, if you have:
- Heart failure or significant heart disease
- Kidney disease
- Severe high blood pressure
- A fluid restriction advised by your doctor
- An acute illness or fever
This is why a reputable clinic assesses you before every session rather than just putting a drip in. If you're pregnant, discuss it with your doctor first.
What a session involves
A registered nurse checks your ID, takes a short history and baseline observations, and confirms the session is suitable for you today. A small cannula is placed, the fluid runs over about an hour, and the cannula is removed. Mild bruising at the site is common and settles in a few days. Needing to pass urine more than usual afterwards is normal.
Choosing a provider
Whoever provides IV hydration, look for three things: a registered nurse or doctor placing the cannula and monitoring you, a genuine assessment before every session, and honesty about what the service can and can't do.
